Reasons Behind Resignation:
– Health Concerns: Ganduje stated that he needs to focus on his personal health and well-being.
– Internal Party Pressure: Stakeholders from the North Central zone had been pushing for the chairmanship position to be returned to their region, citing zoning arrangements.
– Controversy Over Leadership Style: Ganduje’s leadership style and handling of key party affairs have been criticized by some party members
Impact and Next Steps:
– Acting Chairman: A National Vice Chairman of the party is expected to assume leadership in an acting capacity pending the party’s national convention scheduled for December.
– Party Stability: Ganduje’s resignation is seen as a move to stabilize the party and strengthen its unity ahead of the 2027 general elections
The source added “the obvious and ridiculous outing in Bwari Area Council Chairmanship primary election of the party was the height of disgrace.”
“Where the DPO noticeably chased other Aspirants away leaving only one Hon. Joshua Musa Ishaku who was a stooge of PDp and who had not supported Tinubu in the 2023 presidential primaries.”
Another said the move, it is understood follows intense pressure from stakeholders within the APC, especially from the North Central zone, who have repeatedly called for the chairmanship position to return to their region. Ganduje’s expected resignation also comes amid mounting internal opposition over his leadership style and the party’s internal power dynamics.
Ganduje, who assumed office in August 2023 following the resignation of Abdullahi Adamu, has faced sustained agitation from North Central leaders who argue that their region deserves to produce the next party chairman.
In what appears to be a calculated political compromise, the APC is reportedly planning to appoint one of its current national vice chairmen as acting chairman until a new substantive leader is elected at the party’s national convention scheduled for December.
Sources close to the APC National Working Committee revealed that Ganduje, a former governor of Kano State, was persuaded to step aside as part of broader efforts to stabilise the party and strengthen its unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
