GREATRIBUNETVNEWS–THE Chairman-designate of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, has clarified his role in the 2023 Presidential Election Petitions Court. Speaking at the National Assembly, Amupitan explained that he represented Labour Party’s Peter Obi as a lawyer, not as a loyalist.
Setting the Record Straight
Amupitan denied claims of being part of the opposition parties’ legal teams, stating .
– No involvement with PDP : Amupitan emphasized his role was limited to representing Obi in the tribunal.
– Not part of Tinubu’s team : He dismissed speculations linking him to President Bola Tinubu’s legal team.
Evidence
Amupitan provided evidence to support his claims, obtaining certified true copies of appearances at the tribunal and Supreme Court, which showed :
– No record of involvement: His name was not found in the proceedings.
– Transparency: Amupitan’s clarification aims to establish his credibility and impartiality as INEC Chairman-designate.
His nomination to succeed Professor Mahmood Yakubu as INEC Chairman had stirred controversy, with critics questioning his neutrality and independence due to the circulating allegations.
Following a thorough screening session, however, the Senate confirmed his appointment, officially naming him the sixth substantive Chairman of INEC, succeeding Yakubu, whose tenure has now come to an end.
