TOGO, NIGER, AND BENIN OWE NIGERIA N25BN FOR ELECTRICITY: “38.09% REMITTANCE PERFORMANCE–NERC

GREATRIBUNTVNEWS–TOGO, Niger, and Benin collectively owe Nigeria $17.8 million (over N25 billion) for electricity supplied under bilateral arrangements, according to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC)
KEY ISSUES:
– Unpaid Balance : The three countries were invoiced $18.69 million for electricity supplied during Q3 2025, but only remitted $7.125 million, leaving an unpaid balance of $11.56 million.
– Legacy Debt : Outstanding debts from previous quarters amount to $6.23 million, pushing the total debt to $17.8 million (N25.36 billion).
– Low Remittance Performance : International customers achieved a remittance rate of 38.09%, compared to 87.61% for domestic bilateral customers.
– International Offtakers : Compagnie Énergie Électrique du Togo, Société Béninoise d’Énergie Électrique of Benin, and Société Nigérienne d’Électricité of Niger are the defaulting countries.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s 11 electricity distribution companies remitted N381.29 billion to the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc and the Market Operator in Q3 2025, from a total invoice of N400.48 billion, translating to a 95.21% payment rate. The figures were based on reconciled market settlements submitted to NERC as of December 18, 2025
