NUJ OYO STATE COUNCIL TAKES STAND: REINSTATES CHAPELS, DEMANDS FUNDS, AND CALLS FOR SECURITY ACTION

GREATRIBUNETVNEWS–THE newly elected leadership of Oyo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), under the chairmanship of Comrade Akeem Abas, convened its first congress on Saturday, January 10, 2026.
The following resolutions
affecting journalists and the community were unanimously adopted:
Key Resolutions:
– Reinstatement of Dissolved Chapels : “The State Council reinstated four chapels, namely 32FM Chapel; New Media Chapel; Daar Communication Chapel, and Ajayi Crowder FM Chapel, that were duly inaugurated but denied participation in the December 9 election by the previous administration.”
Recovery of NUJ Estate Funds : “The congress noted with deep disappointment the ongoing saga surrounding the union’s estate funds currently held by Alhaji Akeugbagold. Despite repeated assurances that he would return the sum of ₦11,000,000(Eleven Million Naira) owed the union, no payment has been made.”
– Condemnation of Rising Insecurity: “The congress expressed grave concern over the deteriorating security situation in Oyo State, particularly the recent bandit attack on Old Oyo National Park, at Oloka village, in Oriire Local Government Area, which tragically claimed the lives of five forest guards.”
– Call for Security Action : “Implement strict profiling and regulation of Okada riders entering the state. Strengthen border security as well as deploy additional security personnel to remote and border communities.”
Appreciation:
The State Council extends sincere gratitude to all members who attended the maiden congress under the Abas administration.
It appealed to every journalist in Oyo state to remain steadfast, united and committed to the shared vision and collective goals of the NUJ “as we strive to protect press freedom, promote professional excellence, and defend the welfare of our members.”
