FG AND OHANAEZE BAN EZE NDIGBO TITLE AT HOME AND ABROAD OVER SECURITY CONCERNS

GREATRIBUNETVNEWS–THE Federal Government and Ohanaeze Ndigbo have banned the conferment and coronation of “Eze Ndigbo” titles in Nigeria and abroad, citing security and diplomatic concerns. This decision follows recent incidents where the title sparked protests and violence in countries like South Africa and Ghana.
Key Reasons for the Ban:
– _”The practice is inappropriate and capable of triggering diplomatic and security concerns.”_ – Bianca Ojukwu, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs
– Security Risks: Coronation of Eze Ndigbo titles abroad has led to violent backlash against Nigerians.
– Diplomatic Tensions: Incidents in South Africa and Ghana prompted government intervention.
– Cultural Preservation: South East Traditional Rulers introduced “Onyendu Ndigbo” title for Igbo leaders abroad.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo has abolished the title, and sanctions will be enforced against violators. The Federal Government will communicate this decision to Nigerian embassies and international organizations
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Mission in Pretoria has advised Nigerians residing in South Africa to maintain a low profile and avoid actions that could heighten tensions within their host communities.
The joint directive underscores growing concerns over the implications of traditional titles in diaspora and their potential to strain diplomatic relations.
